Hunt for other killer intensifies as alibi holds up for husband
Diana Lee
Thursday, March 20, 2008
Police yesterday intensified their hunt for the killer of a North Point sex worker while a 23-year-old jobless Pakistani man appeared at Fan Ling Magistrates' Court charged with the murder of three prostitutes in the New Territories. Sources said the police have eliminated the husband of slain North Point sex worker Tam Siu-fong, 27, as the prime suspect after investigators verified his alibi and are now concentrating on her acquaintances.
A postmortem on Tam, found dead on Monday in a 96 Electric Road flat, revealed she had been strangled. A source said police suspect Tam was killed by someone she knew well and that it was a copycat killing to mislead police on the motive.
Meanwhile, Nadeem Razaq, an unemployed man who lives in Tai Po, was accused of murdering Sze Ming-lan, 35, in Tung Lok Street, Yuen Long, on Friday and Sun Xiu-min, 30, and Tse Hau-yuen, 35, in Tai Po on Saturday.
No plea was taken and the the case was adjourned to Tuesday. The tall and sturdy Razaq, spotting dyed short blond hair, appeared calm during the 15-minute hearing. The court was told police needed more time for an in-depth investigation.
The court was also told there will be more identification parades and that police are still trying to track down witnesses and other sex workers. Razaq's lawyer said his client had been beaten up by Macau police and that he was denied access to legal representation until yesterday morning.
The court was also told no interpreter was provided and that Razaq was forced to make a statement in Cantonese. Principal magistrate Michael Jenkins sided with prosecutors in ordering Razaq be remanded in police custody. He was handcuffed and taken away in a police van. About 30 policemen were deployed, with six to seven police motorcycles escorting the van. Razaq was taken to Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital for a checkup after claiming he was not well.
